Mughal Gardens in Srinagar
Shalimar, Nishat and Chashm-e-Shahi constitute the famous Mughal Gardens of Srinagar. They are known as much for their architectural exquisiteness as for the history that surrounds them. It was in the 17th century that Shalimar Bagh (garden) was built as a summer residence and royal court. The layout of both Shalimar and Nishat Bagh are similar to that of the Persian gardens with a water source in the centre and four streams radiating from it.
Chashm-e-Shahi Bagh is known for its fresh water springs, which are popular for their medicinal value. There is also a mountain spring near a shrine called Chasma Sahibi after which the garden is named. In autumn, the Mughal Gardens are covered with fallen red golden leaves – a walk with your beloved is a memory that will last forever.
The Mughal Gardens add a unique charm to the Jhelum River flowing through the center of Srinagar. Don’t forget to click perfect frames at any time of the day.
These hillside gardens riveted the fancy of the Mughals for centuries and captured the fancy of moviemakers. Scenes from the Priyanka Chopra starrer Saat Khoon Maaf were shot here.
Dal Lake in Srinagar
The Dal Lake is the most celebrated and important lake amongst all in Srinagar. It is home to carved wooden houseboats, vibrant shikaras and floating gardens. The backdrop to this eight kilometre long lake is the Pir Panjal mountain range, adding to the magnificence of this picture postcard vista. Don’t forget to travel here early morning to see Srinagar’s famous floating market.
The Dal Lake with exquisitely carved shikaras is any photographers delight. During sunrise and sunset, the place bathed in golden light looks ethereal.
The Dal Lake has been synonymous with many Bollywood blockbusters like Aandhi, Lamhaa, Mission Kashmir and Silsila. More recently, the song Jiya Re of Shahrukh Khan starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan has been shot here.
